Australian ETF inflows hit record $21 billion in September quarter

13 October 2026

  • ETF boom continues with $6.9 billion invested in September
  • $50 billion has been invested in ETFs year to date
  • A record $1 billion poured into Australian fixed-income ETFs in September amid rising rates

Australia’s ETF industry has delivered its strongest quarter on record, attracting approximately $21 billion in net inflows during the September quarter as investors increasingly use ETFs to access growth, income and portfolio diversification.

The record result surpassed the previous quarterly high of $16 billion set in Q3 2025.

The month of September saw Australians invest $6.9 billion into ETFs, marking three consecutive months of similar amounts, taking calendar-year flows to $50 billion and putting the industry within reach of exceeding last year’s full-year record of $53 billion.

The Australian ETF industry finished September with $388.1 billion in assets across 508 products, representing growth of 25.5 per cent over the past year.

Marc Jocum, Senior ETF Strategist at Global X ETFs, said the scale of investing over the past quarter has been significant.

“Australian ETFs have just delivered a record $21 billion quarter, demonstrating that they are becoming a core building block in Australian portfolios,” Mr Jocum said.

“Investors are no longer using ETFs for one purpose. They are using them to build the foundations of their portfolios, access opportunities around the world and create more diversified sources of growth and income.”

Index-based strategies remained at the centre of the industry’s growth, attracting a record $5.9 billion in September and accounting for approximately 85 per cent of monthly flows. Almost two-thirds of industry inflows were directed towards ETFs charging management fees of 0.25 per cent or less.

Australia’s income obsession broadens

The quarter also revealed an accelerating shift towards income-producing investments.

Australian fixed income ETFs attracted a record $1 billion in September as investors sought to take advantage of elevated bond yields.

“Australians have a huge appetite for income and are capitalising on a favourable environment for fixed income,” Mr Jocum said.

“For much of the past decade, investors had to look further up the risk spectrum to generate meaningful income. Today, bond yields are at levels not seen in decades, giving investors an opportunity to lock in higher income while adding greater stability to their portfolios.”

Demand is also extending beyond traditional fixed income. Australian covered call ETFs recorded their strongest monthly inflows in almost 12 years, while infrastructure ETFs attracted more than $1.2 billion during the quarter.

“Investors are increasingly combining bonds, covered call strategies and infrastructure rather than relying on dividends from a small group of Australian companies,” Mr Jocum said.

“Covered call ETFs can generate additional income from equity exposures while helping to moderate volatility, while infrastructure can provide access to essential assets with potentially defensive and income-producing characteristics.

“The strength of these flows suggests investors are positioning for the possibility that interest rates are approaching a peak, while still recognising they may remain higher for longer.”

Record quarter for gold

Gold ETFs saw a record $682 million invested during the September quarter as Australian investors capitalised on lower prices.

“Australian investors continue to favour the yellow metal and, as we have seen before, will use any price weakness to build or maintain strategic allocations to their portfolios,” Mr Jocum said.

“Beyond its traditional safe-haven role, gold is increasingly being viewed as a liquid alternative asset, offering a source of diversification when both equities and bonds face pressure.”
