Global X records 28% jump in gold flows as spot price hits $7000

22 January 2026

Global X ETFs - Media Release - 4 Feb 2026 - RBA rate hike strengthens the case for currency-hedged ETFs.jpg

Australia’s largest gold manager Global X ETFs Australia has seen average weekly flows into its suite of gold ETFs increase in 2026 as the precious metal continues to be favoured by investors.

The Global X suite of gold ETFs includes the Physical Gold Structured ETF (GOLD), Gold Bullion ETF (GXLD) and Gold Bullion (Currency Hedged) ETF (GHLD). Together, these funds have $7.3 billion in assets under management (AUM) following $785 million of flows over the year to 31 December 2025.

Since 1 January this year, Australians have invested an average of $19.8 million a week into the suite of funds, up 28.6% on the $15.4 million in average weekly flows recorded in 2025.

Commenting on the numbers, Global X investment strategist Justin Lin said there are multiple factors contributing to the gold rally.

“While Trump’s quarrel with Europe over Greenland is dominating the news flow, an underrated risk is the skyrocketing yields in Japanese long-dated bonds,” he said.

“Those high yields indicate investor concerns over Japan’s significant debt overhang and raise the risk of disorderly moves in global risk assets, reminiscent of the volatile carry-trade unwinds seen in prior episodes.”

Mr Lin believes gold may have built a short-term floor of US$4500 per ounce (~6700AUD) given the escalation in trade tensions and risks to both the US dollar and Euro.

“However, with gold being one of the best performing assets of the past 12 months, a true, tail-risk scenario could trigger sharp pullbacks as investors liquidate portfolios and return to cash,” he said.

“We would view any such dislocations as a buying opportunity, given gold’s historical tendency to outperform in the months following periods of market stress.”
