Thematic Spotlight: ChatGPT Learns to Think Before It Speaks

AI industry leader, OpenAI, has shocked the world once again with a new model that is programmed to ‘think deeply’ before answering the user’s questions.1 Internally dubbed ‘Strawberry’ and officially named ‘o1’, OpenAI says the chatbot is the first of its kind, designed to solve more complex, multi-step issues, and particularly excels at coding and mathematics – an area that prior GPT iterations had been found lacking. In one X post, researchers at OpenAI claimed the model could rival and even outperform human experts across competition coding and PhD-Level Science Questions.2

A preview version of o1 was made available to paying users of ChatGPT last week, but it comes with a few caveats. First, as the model is still in early development, it won’t have access to many of the features that GPT4 enjoys, such as browsing the web or reading uploaded pictures and documents. The firm plans to first understand how users will use the new model before looking to add more functionality. Secondly, the model apparently underperforms the existing chatbot in certain areas such as creative writing and editing text, where it is often not worthwhile to wait for deeper reasoning. Nonetheless, OpenAI says that the ability for o1 to do complex reasoning tasks ‘is a significant advancement and represents a new level of AI capability’, with the name o1 representing a new evolution in GPT models.3

o1’s release comes as OpenAI is reportedly in talks to sell US$6.5 billion of shares to investors at a valuation of US$150 billion.4 The new valuation for OpenAI almost doubles the US$86 billion seen in the company’s employee tender offer earlier this year.5 OpenAI says the new financing will primarily support the acquisition of extra computing power and other operating expenses.
