Thematic Spotlight: BYD Makes Self-Driving Free for All

BYD is shaking up the EV market after announcing plans to integrate advanced driver-assistance features across its entire vehicle lineup at no extra cost.1 The company’s “God’s Eye” driver-assistance system will now be standard in all vehicles, albeit in different tiers. The popular Seagull hatchback, for example, is priced at just US$9,000 and will receive God’s Eye C, a camera-based solution which supports highway NOA (Navigate on Autopilot).2 Higher tier plans like God’s Eye A will equip cars with three LiDARs to support city navigation on autopilot.

BYD’s strategic decision marks a shake-up of the global EV market where advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) are typically only found in more expensive vehicles. Most directly it openly challenges competitors like Tesla, which charges for similar technology, and as well as other domestic rivals that have yet to offer such features in lower-cost vehicles. BYD’s shares surged to a record high following the announcement, reflecting investor confidence in the company’s approach to democratizing advanced driving features.3

The wide sweeping initiative is just the latest demonstration of BYD’s willingness to innovate and push the boundaries. BYD was the first company to secure Level 3 assisted driving testing license in China. The company’s “God’s Eye” uses a combination of cameras and radar sensors to provide features like valet parking, adaptive cruising, and automated braking. But apart from auto-driving, the company also plans to integrate LLM software from DeepSeek, a Chinese AI startup, to further enhance its driver-assistance capabilities.4 Which would be yet another first in the EV industry.

BYD’s decision to integrate smart and self-driving capabilities into most of its vehicles at little to no cost is a significant move that could reshape the EV market. Analysts have welcomed BYD’s announcement, predicting it will accelerate the adoption of advanced driver-assistance features in the mass market.
